The weather getting colder and the nights getting longer can only mean one thing: winter is well and truly here. Many common illnesses such as colds are more frequent in the winter months, and it can be harder to fight them off. We’ve put together some tips that can help you fight off the coughs and sniffles, to stay healthy all winter long:
Eat more fruit and veg!
It is packed with natural sources of vitamins and minerals that help you stay healthy. For example, spinach alone is a great source of Vitamin A, fibre, and magnesium. Fresh, canned and frozen produce all counts towards your five a day!
Add some Omega-3 fatty acids to your diet.
These healthy fats are found in foods such as nuts and fish. A natural anti-inflammatory, they can help reduce the joint pain which is more common in the winter months.
Try taking some supplements.
These can help top up your levels of essential vitamins and minerals, which in turn can minimise your chances of getting ill. Some of the most important vitamins for winter are Vitamin C, an antioxidant, and Vitamin D, to absorb calcium and help bone growth, to name just a few benefits!
Make sure to get some exercise.
Whether indoors or outdoors, regular exercise is great to boost your mood and improve your general fitness and health, despite the cold temperatures!
Try adding more spices to your dishes.
Spices and other additions such as turmeric, onion and ginger not only add flavour to your cooking, but can also help improve your immune function, meaning you’re less likely to get ill.
Wash your hands frequently.
Your hands are one of the areas most likely to harbour germs which can cause illnesses. Make sure to wash your hands regularly with warm, soapy water, especially after touching surfaces many others may have touched!
Get some sleep!
A good night’s sleep has many benefits, including reducing stress, lowering blood pressure, and helping your body fight back against illness, all of which are important to stay healthy as the weather gets colder!
Carry some hand sanitiser.
Use it on the go when hand washing facilities aren’t always readily available. Antibacterial hand sanitiser can also be used to quickly disinfect surfaces and objects which may be harbouring germs!
Soak in the sun.
It may seem impossible during winter, but on the rare occasion the sun does appear, make the most of it. Enjoy some time outdoors, to soak up the Vitamin D you need to keep healthy!
Putting the combination of these tips into regular practice can go a long way to maintaining your health throughout the winter. Most importantly, make sure you are eating a healthy balanced diet, and if you feel unwell, seek medical advice, to keep your health at it’s best year round!
